If you are handy with a putty knife a little drywall/joint compound goes a long way to enhance otherwise unsightly walls. After we removed the paneling on the stairs, the walls needed a lot of work so we textured the walls by hand. The kitchen which had several layers of wall paper with paint sandwiched in between, was also redone with this method after the old stuff was removed.
It’s a simple process. You just scoop the compound onto your putty knife and in small sections, spread it evenly on the wall. Use the putty knife to create the texture design you prefer.
